Giving The Best Presentation

I often tell the story from over 30 years ago about what came from an innocent lunch with friends. A couple of buddies that worked for a small manufacturing firm were telling me they got asked by a large manufacturer to visit and make a bid presentation. It would be a huge client win if they could get it. Knowing of my radio broadcasting experience, they asked me for tips, and later that day convinced their boss to hire me to give it.

 

After learning about certain auto parts and preparing the 3 minute presentation, the 3 of us went to the location. As we arrived, I noticed another company folding up their presentation of (competing) products and thought to myself, “This will be a tough act to follow”. However, I had a job to do. Upon delivering a flawless and on time presentation and answering a couple of questions, I left there knowing that I gave it my best. A couple days later, my buddy called all excited and told me, “We got the bid!!”. Before I could finish congratulating him, he cut in to tell me that he asked the executive why they were chosen. “He said it because your presentation was far and away the best!”.

 

That moment is when it hit me in full force that it was not the product, but WAS the presentation that won the job.

 

After all these years, I continue to watch real estate agents and investors present properties and opportunities, or prepare Listing Presentations, and I flat out KNOW they could do them a lot better, which would win them a lot more business.
